How to Troubleshoot an ELECTRIC Water Heater

 

Steps

Heating element or Thermostat are the main reason for electric water heater failure

  1. Shut off the power to the water heater from the breaker
  2. remove the access panels to expose the element and thermostat
  3. remove the insulation
  4. remove the plastic cover that is covering the element and thermostat
  5. verify the power is off using a volt stick
  6. remove the wires to the upper element
  7. resistance check using a voltmeter
  8. one probe to each screw to test the resistance
  9. if the meter is measuring no resistance, then the element is bad
  10. if the upper element is good, repeat the steps to check the bottom element
  11. testing a ground element set to OHMs using the voltmeter
  12. use one probe to the screw and the other probe to the neutral side
  13. should receive no resistance, if there is resistance then the grounded element is bad.

  • 测试接地的加热元件(万用表设置为欧姆档)
    • 一根探针接触螺丝,另一根探针接触中性端
    • 应无电阻值,如果有电阻,则加热元件接地故障
